Hop On Over to One Martine Gallery

October 9, 2022 by Beverly

In case you missed the Food For Thought Exhibition Opening last week, please join us at One Martine Gallery for the White Plains #SeriousFunArtsFest Gallery Hop this Thursday, October 13th from 6 to 9 pm.

Food For Thought is featuring 29 of my paintings and prints through Thanksgiving Weekend (Sunday, November 27th), along with the delectable artwork of Nancy Cohen and rich still life photography by Andre Baranowski. Three of my vending machine paintings are showcased in this window display – of which I am very proud! (I can’t help myself…).

Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays 10 to 6pm, Sundays 12-5pm, Closed Mondays.

Oil & Acrylic Paintings by Beverly Shipko: Icons of the Vending Chip World (20 x 20 inches), America’s Favorite Candies – Icons of the Vending Candy World (10 x 20 inches) [left] and Food Choices (36 x 36 inches) [right]

I am very excited about this evening re-opening, which is easy to be now that I’ve seen the show.

Webmaster Laura says this is my best show yet (of course she’s a bit biased, but it’s fabulous to hear!). The spacious gallery has a contemporary Manhattan vibe. Plus the entire exhibit is beautifully designed by Walker Manzke, Director of One Martine Gallery. Thank you, Walker!

Invitation

Here’s is the official email invitation.

Plus Gallery Hop Night is FREE and includes a total of 3 gallery locations all within walking distance of each other, one of which is One Martine Gallery.

One Martine Gallery (located at 1 Martine Avenue), is a new gallery in downtown White Plains, New York, within walking distance of the White Plains train station. If you’re driving, see the parking directions at the bottom of this post.

In addition, the Gallery Hop is part of a much larger Serious Fun Arts Fest 5 Day event in White Plains running from October 12 to 16, sponsored by Arts Westchester and presented by Montefiore Einstein. Specifically, it includes everything from concerts to live mural painting, a public art walking tour to dancing in the streets. Click here for more information.

While the official Gallery Hop time is 6 to 9 pm, I will be there closer to 5:30pm to greet people coming directly from work.

Normal gallery hours are: Tuesdays through Saturdays 10 to 6pm, Sundays 12-5pm, Closed Mondays. Food For Thought runs through Thanksgiving weekend.

Parking and GPS Instructions

Since I got a lot of positive feedback from my previous parking instructions, I am repeating them again here.

One Martine Gallery (not to be confused with the apartment complex 1 Martine at City Square on your GPS device) is located on Martine Avenue, a one way street going south towards the White Plains train station.

The parking garage entrance is just past the gallery as Martine starts to curve to the right towards Bank Street. You can see Seward Johnson’s statue of an embracing couple right before the driveway. See below for a photo and parking instructions provided by the gallery.

Finally, if you pass the entrance, don’t panic! Simply keep going around the block and try again. I found the entrance easily the second time – and that was without this photo.

Call (914) 948-1284 if you have any questions, or email info@onemartinegallery.com.

Once you’re at the gallery, ask for directions to the concierge desk to validate your parking ticket for free parking.

Please let me know if you have any questions or need additional information.

I hope you can make it Thursday, October 13th for this fun event! We all need a lot more fun, don’t we?

September 24, 2022 by Beverly

You are invited to the Opening Reception of a two woman show all about my favorite subject – food!

The exhibit features over 20 paintings and prints of my work, including my latest and largest vending paint, Food Choices.

Indoor Virtual Studio Tour: Oreo Gallery

September 30, 2020 by Beverly

I could never have a Studio Tour without Oreos. I just couldn’t.

Before the pandemic, I struggled with how to display my smallest Oreo Cookie paintings on 9 foot walls in an open apartment layout (not to mention how to host the Oreo Contest with limited space…).

My Oreos felt too intimate to be floating on huge walls – even the largest one, Cosmic Oreo, at 24 x 30 inches. They needed a more defined space, like the front stairs of my old house in 2018, where Oreo prints and paintings greeted you when you walked in.

Finally, one night the solution came to me after I fell sleep, and just relaxed. Give the Oreos their own gallery! Their own room. A room that was dry enough to hang prints, and where guests would see them.

My Oreo Cookie Gallery featuring Cosmic Oreo

I just needed to reframe the issue – and think outside the box. I had an extra room. Not a closet, but the guest powder room! (I bet the toilet paper roll above gave it away…)

When you walk in, this left view, showcases two of my favorite Oreo prints.

And here I am taking a photo in the mirror on the right, re-creating a childhood dream of endless Oreos with the reflections. Ok, it was a nice try…. Using the mirror is the only way to photograph this room without a wide angle lens.

My Oreo Gallery is a work in progress. As I inventory all my paintings in storage, I’m still finding little Oreo paintings that I can’t do without.

Last week I uncovered Stack of Oreos. I knew the perfect spot for this little gem (all 5 x 7 inches of it, oil on panel) was above My Oreo Cookie (6 x 6 inch drawing, unframed).

Stack of Oreos Oil Painting and My Oreo Cookie Drawing

I hope one day you’ll be able to see the Oreo Gallery in person, and its anticipated additions. With 9 foot ceilings, there is still room to grow upwards as I unwrap more paintings.

Until then, enjoy this virtual tour!

P.S. Did you notice that Cosmic Oreo is a blown up version of My Oreo Cookie?

Invitation to my Rockport, Maine Opening

June 19, 2017 by Beverly

You are invited to the Grand Opening Weekend of my first solo show in Rockport, Maine:

“You CAN Have your Cake and Eat It Too!”

Artist Reception – Saturday, July 8th, 2017

from 12:00 to 5:00 pm

Over 70 paintings and drawings are included in the exhibit at The Michael Good Gallery, which recently relocated to 325 Commercial Street, Route 1, in Rockport, Maine. Phone: 207-236-9623

It’s a big day for me in more ways than one. Jay and I will be celebrating our 38th wedding anniversary!

I hope you’ll come and join my husband Jay, daughter Bonnie and I on this joyous occasion – and savor the paintings along with delicious desserts (real ones!) that match the theme of the show.

On Sunday morning, July 9th, from 10 – 12am I’ll be doing an Artist Talk and Demo called: “Sweet Revenge of the Dentist’s Daughter… how a daughter deprived of candy, cookies and ice cream used a paintbrush to taste them all.”

I’ll give you the inside scoop in the gallery on my 18 year magnificent confection obsession with painting all sorts of sweets, from partially consumed classic desserts like Oreos and Hostess cupcakes, cakes and tarts, to bakery shelves, vending machines – and more.

If you can’t make the opening or talk, the exhibit will be open at The Michael Good Gallery for 6 weeks (June 15 – August 1) 6 days a week (Mon-Sat from 11-5pm). The gallery is closed on Sundays.

I hope to see you in Maine!

RiverArts Studio Tour Events

April 8, 2017 by Beverly

You might think that my upcoming April 22 and 23rd Open Studio is just a weekend event. It’s actually part of a large and ambitious annual local program, the RiverArts Artists Studio Tour.

The first event was an Artists Welcome Breakfast on March 17.

Most recently, Jay and I went to a RiverArts kickoff event for the 2017 Studio Tour (Hastings-on-Hudson Municipal Building, 7 Maple Avenue). Every artist on the Tour was invited to submit a work for this exhibition (open all of April).

This attractive banquet table greeted us as we came through the door. There was quite a crowd. Of course I whipped out my camera at the sight of food…

Kudos to Doug Coe, Executive Director of RiverArts, for shepherding this entire event, and to active Board Member Kara Lenkeit, who always has a smile on her face.

A special thanks this year to Peggie Blizzard (with her artist husband Larry) for bringing back the Dobbs Ferry ArtWalk. Due to her initiative, along with Ellen Crane, I’ll have a painting in a Dobbs Ferry store for two weeks to gain awareness. (Now I just have to pick which one!)

This year I chose to show Oreo Mandala: Studio Tour Oreo Cookie Contest Entries since its concept is inextricably bound to the Studio Tour itself.

This original print is a composite of 9 unique Oreos bitten by 9 different people who all came to my Open Studio in previous years.

Let me introduce you to Marisa Silverstein, another participating artist, who kindly took this photo. She and I both attended a timely and informative workshop on “Artists Using Social Media” – tips and tricks to increase your web visibility around special events like the Studio Tour. Luke Joerger of Hastings Digital hastingsdigital.com presented a lot of useful information which Marisa and I are still processing.

The workshop and a post-workshop discussion with Marisa inspired this post.

With only two weeks to go, it’s time to hunker down and get my studio in shape. Easier said than done since the room was dismantled by the painters last week. Wish me luck!

$1 Art Vending Machine

March 4, 2017 by Beverly

After 2 days visiting hundreds of exhibits during Armory Art Fair Week, there’s one interactive installation that stands out above all others  – and that’s Art Vending Machine $1 Paintings.

Booth 512 on Pier 94 at the Armory Show, Gallerie Forsblom, Helsinki, Stockholm

I love it! Apparently so does the Guggenheim who is thinking about purchasing this.

Located on the 94th Pier (Booth 512) at the grandaddy Armory Show (through Sunday, March 4), Art Vending Machine $1 Paintings attracted long lines whenever it was operating. The novelty of watching an original piece of artwork pop out of a huge vending machine for $1 was irresistible.

Simply put in your dollar, choose the concept you want from the list, tell the representative who talks to artist through a cardboard tube in the wall, wait a bit, and out it comes. Then you have your photo taken with your original art.

The buyers all walked away with big grins, proudly holding their abstract compositions, many commenting they were going to frame their creations.

This was one of the most innovative and memorable installations I have even seen at an art fair. It has special appeal to me as a painter of vending machines (Icons of the Candy World, Icons of the Chip World), my most recent being Super Foods.

“Super Foods”, Vending Machine Series, by Beverly Shipko, Oil on wood panel, 5 x 7 inches

With 10 paintings in the series so far, Art Vending Machine $1 Paintings opened up the world of possibilities to explore further. I plan to go beyond broccoli and think broader. As the metaphorical visual below implies, this theme can incorporate any material – even the kitchen sink.

So can I.

A Storybook Ending: 45 Years At OK Harris

January 13, 2016 by Beverly

Last night I took time off from my personal challenge to go to a noteworthy book party in New York City. This impressive Save the Date announcement unexpectedly arrived a few weeks ago in the form of this special package.

DSCN9429

Inside I found an amazing book, 45 Years At O.K. Harris, containing a history of the iconic SoHo gallery pedicured through a staggering compendium of art postcard announcements and exhibition lists from O.K. Harris Works of Art (1969 – 2014).

DSCN9432

O.K. Harris, which showed my work for over a decade, was the first gallery to open in Soho and virtually the last. I blogged about this in O.K. Harris, the End of an Era.

Suzanne Kreps, manager and chief archivist at O.K. Harris since 1983 (among her many other talents), had the idea to put up the announcement cards by the closing date, April 19, 2014. The postcards went the length of this very large space, one city block long, from Wooster Street to West Broadway, that hosted 5 solo shows at any given time.

DSCN9924

Photographs courtesy of John Halperin, “45 Years At OK Harris”, 2014

The book party celebration was a lively event at the Curator’s Gallery (23rd Street in Chelsea), packed full of O.K. Harris artists, the staff, and the Karp family, including Marilynn Karp, wife of Ivan Karp, founder extraordinaire who passed away in 2012. Also present were long time collectors, like Ann Moore, the retired Chairman and CEO of Time Inc., our hostess and now gallerist.

Everyone was connected to Ivan in some way – and therefore to each other – so conversation was lively (and loud!).

Jay and I spent some time with Rick Witter, here with a typical smile on his face. Rick deftly laid the chalkline to keep all those postcards straight – not an easy task but probably a piece of cake for him. Rick spent a big chunk of his life with Ivan at OK Harris deftly handling the back room and all installations. It was great to hear him reminisce about Ivan and the gallery.

IMG_7610

Both the book and the party gave me the kind of closure I was looking for (but maybe didn’t know it). The closing of O.K. Harris, a true New York institution in the art world, left a gap in my artistic life. What I discovered last night was I’m in good company.

A huge thank you goes to Ron Weis, a longtime O.K. Harris artist, who had the idea for this elegant storybook properly honoring a legendary gallery in the art world.  And Ron personally paid for the publication out of his own pocket, a generous offer by any standard.

With this precious momento in hand, it’s officially time for all of us to move on to happily ever after and truly make this a storybook ending.

Now Showing in Nantucket Too!

July 19, 2015 by Beverly

I am pleased to announce that Cavalier Gallery in Nantucket, MA is exhibiting my work in a Summer Group Exhibition. Thank you Lindsay for sending these installation photos today!

In this first photo, you can see 4 of my small Challenge paintings of desserts, in a place of honor next to the renowned Wolf Kahn, and over one of my favorite Carole Feuerman resin sculptures.

image002image001What fun for a summer show! It looks like the swimmer is resting and dreaming about desserts, doesn’t it?

Here we see Cosmic Oreo set in a nook against a fireplace screen, as if it’s on a stage. It sure does pop! I’m impressed with the installation of this eclectic group of paintings and sculptures which somehow works well together.

image004

In addition to the paintings Lindsay photographed, Cavalier Nantucket has 10 more, including my ice cream sandwich series, Trifles from Crust Pizza and Wine Bar, Jay’s Ice Cream Cone – all very fitting for a summer show set on an island destination with 90 degree temperatures.

Cavalier Gallery just moved its Nantucket location to a larger space in its own building at 10 Federal Street, and now has a sculpture garden.

I hope you’ll satisfy your ice cream and dessert cravings at Cavalier the next time you’re in Nantucket!

Now Showing in Greenwich!

July 19, 2015 by Beverly

A few weeks ago, I dropped off 28 paintings with Cavalier Galleries in Greenwich, CT, all of which you can see in a slideshow on the Cavalier website.

DSCN0058

DSCN0088

Ron Cavalier, the owner, said that he would spread the paintings among his 3 galleries, the other two being in Nantucket, MA and New York City.

Yesterday Jay and I went to the Cavalier Gallery in Manhattan, and you can see what we found there. Today we went back to Greenwich to see which paintings that Ron kept in Connecticut. It felt like a cross between going on a treasure hunt and playing Where’s Waldo!

We found 4 paintings, the first of which was this Ho-Ho.

IMG_5348

Then I spotted my Double Yolk Egg Raw painting in very good company, next to an early Hans Hoffman, a giant in world of Abstract Expressionism,  and diagonally from Wolff Kahn, a contemporary painter famous for his use of color and landscapes.

DSCN0081

At this point, I was getting silly and couldn’t resist… What would you call this juxtaposition of Bonnie’s Crumbs Bakeshop Mini-Pack with the resting swimmer? How about Sweet Dreams?

IMG_5358

Ron decided to keep this painting in Greenwich since there’s a Crumbs Bake Shop nearby.

After we found the 4th painting, My Fractured World – Oreo Cookie, JoAnn gave us a private tour of the backroom upstairs, which was packed with a dazzling display of work. It’s always fascinating to go behind the scenes of a gallery.

IMG_5375

So I hope you’ll stop by to explore when you’re in the area. The work is constantly being rotated. Cavalier is located at 405 Greenwich Avenue in the heart of downtown Greenwich, CT.

Maybe you’ll have as much fun as Jay and I did.

Now Showing!

July 17, 2015 by Beverly

Today I had the pleasure of seeing my paintings at Cavalier Gallery in New York City.

DSCN4055

It was nice to see the eggs hung as a set – cooked and raw together. And I had never ever thought of hanging paintings above the long Cafe Lalo painting, both to make a stronger statement and provide visual balance in the gallery.

Here’s one of my favorite serial works. I can thank Ivan Karp of O.K. Harris for inspiring me to combining all four paintings together in one framed piece to create a narrative whole.

Accepted!

June 18, 2015 by Beverly

It’s human nature to want to be recognized for your achievements – whether you’re applying for college, a new job, or an art show.

And there’s nothing like the rush you get from getting that email that says accepted.

Today I got to relive that experience when Jay and I went to the 65th Annual Art of the Northeast Exhibition at the Silvermine Arts Center in New Canaan, CT (through July 26th), curated by Michelle Grabner & Brad Killam, Co-founders of the Suburban and the Poor Farm in the Chicago area.

DSCN3823

It’s always fun to walk into a new exhibit and see how your work is hung within the context of the show. We didn’t have to look far since we found Adrianna’s Strawberry Kiwi Blueberry Tart in the front gallery.

Here’s a closer view of the carton of eggs nearby, carrying on the food theme.

DSCN3808

It was a quiet weekday, good for taking photos. We had a wedding celebration the night of the opening reception, so unfortunately I didn’t get to meet the curators (fellow Midwesterners) or other artists.

There was quite a variety of work, both in materials and techniques, with a fair amount of sculpture and ceramics.

DSCN3800The Art of the Northeast is a show I had heard about for years and intended to enter, and finally did this year. I had the pleasure of getting that stamp of approval – accepted.

Somehow it never gets old. Ask anyone who has ever applied for anything!

An Unexpected Opportunity

March 24, 2015 by Beverly

Sometimes good things happen when you least expect it.

Last week, I was meeting my friend, Marge, for lunch in Rye, NY, when I walked by a gallery that does custom framing. Since I had a question, I left a postcard for the owner of Gallery 52, who is coincidentally named Beverly (maybe that was a sign…).

IMG_3338

The next day, Beverly called. Before I knew it, she was coming over on her day off with her sister, Joan, to pick up some of my work to put in Gallery 52 at 81 Purchase Street in Rye.

IMG_3311

We certainly had fun that morning. It’s always a good thing to get feedback (especially when it’s so positive!) and to see which paintings resonate with people. Beverly’s enthusiasm for my work was contagious!

From start to finish, the whole process took less than a week. On my birthday, I went over to see how my paintings looked in the store, and got this nice present.

IMG_3343

DSCN7782

The colorful display is eye-catching from the street, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride at this unexpected turn of events.

If you’re in the Rye neighborhood, be sure to stop by.

Day 9 of the 30/30 Challenge – Baby Shoe

January 9, 2015 by Beverly

Surprise! I really did take a break from desserts today. Here’s an oil sketch of Laura’s Baby Shoe (we only have one).

"Laura's Baby Shoe" by Beverly Shipko, Oil sketch on panel, 6 x 6 inches.

“Laura’s Baby Shoe” by Beverly Shipko, Oil sketch on panel, 6 x 6 inches.

For many years, I thought this shoe belonged to Laura, my oldest daughter. Bonnie, my youngest, just informed me that it’s hers. I associate it with Laura because all her baby shoes looked like this. Maybe I’ll be able to find Bonnie’s pastel multi-colored baby shoes before the end of this challenge and do a painting of her’s too.

I ran across this baby shoe last week, and put it aside thinking it would make a nice painting and memory of times past. After yesterdays’s colorful but demanding donut painting, I was ready for a change in subject, level of complexity, and cleanup (fewer colors = fewer brushes). This monochromatic subject fit the bill. I also think a recent show called Wayne Thiebaud: In Black on White at the Allan Stone Projects in Chelsea played a unconscious role in my decision. Well, maybe not so unconscious since I’ve been looking at this image in a brochure since December, and you already know about how I feel about my hero, Wayne Thiebaud.

Wayne Thiebaud's "Pie Slice" " courtesy of the Allan Stone Projecs , charcoal and pencil on board.

Wayne Thiebaud’s “Pie Slice” ” reproduced courtesy of the Allan Stone Projects.

When my husband and daughter saw today’s oil sketch, they were less than enthusiastic about this unexpected shift in direction. Maybe I should have prepared them first. Clearly this painting did not meeting Bonnie’s expectations since her feedback was that it was boring and colorless. Jay tried valiantly (but failed) to cover up his dislike. It doesn’t matter, because I painted it for myself.

Nevertheless, I couldn’t help but wonder what this oil sketch would have looked like with a colorful background to punch it up a bit… Should I change it? Or try another one? I would like to hear what you think.

This was the first day of the challenge that I painted from an actual object. Even so, I used my portable lamp (aka flashlight) to play with the shadows and took photos to help decide on the final composition. I didn’t realize until today how “addicted” I am to digital photography as part of the process. And it’s so much easier to paint with the aid of a photo conveniently taped at eye level on your easel. Below are two “finalist” options with subtle differences. The first one looked good to me until I saw the second with the funkier shoelace shadow, the direction that I went with.

DSCN4673

DSCN4676

I am really enjoying painting every day, and am learning a great deal on so many levels. The difficult part is finding time for everything else. I definitely need to fit more cooking in. The true challenge today was to finish before 6:30pm when Jay and I were leaving for the Holiday Train Show evening event at the New York Botannical Gardens (which was truly stunning at night!). I even managed to post to Leslie’s site before leaving (I was #297 today; moving on up).

Tomorrow we have New York Philharmonic tickets and had originally planned to go to some museums first. That would probably mean doing a drawing instead of a painting, which I don’t have to decide right now. But why do I feel like that’s cheating?

See you tomorrow.

My Hero

October 6, 2014 by Beverly

“Dear Mr. Thiebaud,

I am an artist who has painted desserts for a decade, and have tried to meet you when you visited New York. Unfortunately, the weather intervened. First, there was a major storm when you were scheduled to speak at the Neuberger Museum in Purchase, NY many years ago. Most recently, Hurricane Sandy walloped New York right before your planned talk at Acquavella Galleries.

My husband and I will be coming to the San Francisco area the first week in June, and we would like to meet you and visit your studio in Sacramento at your convenience.”

Unfortunately, my visit to Wayne Thiebaud’s studio this past summer never materialized. At age 93, Mr. Thiebaud is still a rather private person, despite being a famous award winning artist with iconic rock star status in the art world, especially among Pop Art lovers. However, his unique style actually defies any specific label.

In late May, my request was graciously turned down during a lively phone call from Kelly Purcell, the Director of the Paul Thiebaud Gallery, who called at the request of Mr. Thiebaud himself. Kelly and I chatted for a while about Mr. Thiebaud and my art, how he motivated me to try new things in my own work, which was positively received. We spoke about my upcoming trip to San Francisco, and she gave me many tips on where to go to experience the local art scene. Kelly made sure to tell me about Mr. Thiebaud’s upcoming show in New York at Acquavella Galleries in October, but mentioned that he would not be attending the opening.

Although I was excited to get a response from someone so close to Wayne Thiebaud and thought it was a very considerate, a part of me was disappointed when I had to fill the hole in our itinerary which I had left open for a trip to Sacramento. Although this was frustrating, I had to respect his wishes. Deep down, I knew that I would have done the same thing if I had been in his shoes. And trust me, there’s a point in telling you all of this.

My whole attitude changed Tuesday night when I went to the opening of the Wayne Thiebaud Show at Acquavella Galleries (18 East 79th Street) in New York City, even if the artist wouldn’t be there.  So my husband Jay and I left late, taking our time getting down to the city and into the gallery.

We slowly toured the four large rooms on two floors trying to savor every work before closing. I naturally gravitated toward the food paintings, especially the desserts. I was mesmerized by this painting, with its stark white display case depicted with bold, assertive horizontal strokes, contrasting dramatically with the vibrantly colored circular cake shapes. I admired how Thiebaud revels in the application of thick paint on these cakes, as if he were icing them in his kitchen.

IMG_1085

IMG_1084

Sometimes the voluminous paint itself seems to be the subject, as in this work. The poetry is in the paint, with the white icing on the left dessert protruding a 1/4 inch or more from the canvas. I wondered how long it took to dry.

IMG_1104

Let’s not forget the humble hunks of cheese that feel monumental in this small painting, and yet seem magically abstract. (Much has been written about the influence of still life painter Antonio Morandi on Thiebaud, and I could feel it here for the first time.)

Since I associate Thiebaud more with food and San Francisco landscapes, I was unexpectedly struck by the range of insightful and powerful portraits in the show, staring right at you with their vivid colors and dynamic brushwork. Jay couldn’t resist showing us his take on this Thiebaud portrait of an art historian intently examining a painting.

I was so enthralled that I never even thought to ask if Wayne Thiebaud was at the opening.

At 7:50pm, 10 minutes before closing, Jay and I went back through the galleries taking more photos. There we met Clay, an outgoing guy who introduced himself as a friend of Thiebaud’s from Sacramento, who told us Thiebaud had recently modified this painting called “Flood Waters” by adding the bridge going across the water (which explained the catalog date of 2006/2013).  Clay was kind enough to offer to take this photo of the two of us in front of this dramatic birds-eye view landscape that is so typical of Thiebaud.

When I mentioned to Clay that I was writing a blog, he asked for my website, commenting that Wayne Thiebaud had just gotten an iPad.  Before I knew it, I was standing next to my hero having my picture taken with him.

In the brief time that I spent with him, I got a feeling of quiet strength, humility and integrity emanating from Wayne Thiebaud and saw signs of a gentle sense of humor. I finally got to tell him how much I admired his work and had followed his career. As Thiebaud shook my hand (with a very firm handshake), he told me that was what he liked to hear – with an amused twinkle in his eye, almost like a wink. He was the kind of person I would have enjoyed spending an afternoon with, both as a student and as a friend listening to stories of his remarkable life and career.

When Clay first introduced us, I found myself almost speechless and in shock. Now that I have had a little time to reflect, I have gathered my thoughts together in a letter.

Dear Mr. Thiebaud,

If I’m really lucky, you’ll be reading this blog post on your new iPad and seeing a few things I wanted to say in person, but didn’t. Most of all, I want to thank you for being such an inspiration to me for so many years.

The simple power of your work and focus on the everyday world speaks directly to me, always bringing a smile to my face. I feel like we are kindred spirits on some level in the way we experience the world, and what we choose to paint – which is why I treasure the moments I spend looking through copies of your sketchbooks. And it was truly an honor to be included in two group shows featuring sweets with you.

Your flair for turning mundane objects into dramatic compositions, your fearless use of bold color, light & shadows, and the magic in your distinctive application of paint has certainly influenced my own approach to making art. I believe I am a better artist because of you. It was a pleasure to finally meet you.

Bites in Print

July 7, 2014 by Beverly

Today’s blog focuses on various ways to execute bites from Oreo Cookies. If you were expecting bites from The Vampire Diaries or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you may want to look elsewhere…. I finally took the plunge into the whole new world of prints, opening the door to a new area of exploration – along with a new gallery in California and a July group show in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.

After working almost exclusively in oil for many years, I began a series of 6 x 6 inch Oreo cookie drawings. Since it is easier and quicker to draw than to paint (think no messy oil paint brush cleanup!), I am able to explore a larger variety of possibilities and whimsical compositions using this particular icon. Here are 10 drawings in cello bags, along with some of the original subjects.

My initial concept was to make prints of single original Limited Edition Giclée Art Prints based on the Oreo drawings, like this one.

While looking at the initial array square Oreo drawings on the table (shown above), I started playing with the tiles and arranging them. A composition eventually emerged. For the next two days, I intermittently rearranged the drawings, when I finally realized I was looking at my first composite print of 9 Oreo Cookies called “Oreo Mandala”. “Oreo Mandala” made its gallery debut at SuperFresh Food Art Gallery in Novato, CA, which Jay and I visited on the first day of our recent San Francisco trip. Let me introduce you to one of the co-owners, Jennifer Carden, a California food stylist, who coincidentally went to art school at SUNY Purchase. It’s a small world!

Don’t you just love the big fork next to the Oreo print?

Imagine being in a room surrounded by exquisite food, without gaining any weight… I have Cristine Kossow, a fellow food artist who I met through our local Art Card Group, to thank for telling me about this gallery.

Now that I am officially an artist who works in print, there are a plethora of opportunities to exhibit prints and drawings that were previously unavailable, such as the PaperWorks 2014 juried show at Upstream Gallery in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, currently on display.

PaperWorks 2014 Announcement

PaperWorks 2014 featured in the RiverTowns Enterprise – with a delicious surprise!

The two Oreo prints accepted into this exhibit are part of a series showing participating entries from my Oreo Cookie Contest, held during the RiverArts Open Studio Tour a few years back. Since the “biter” of the bottom Oreo neglected to leave their name, this “portrait” is titled “Oreo Cookie #2 – Anonymous”. The top print, “Oreo Cookie #8 – My Bite”, was my own contribution to the series and thus is my Oreo “portrait”. Can you see the resemblance?

Stop by the Upstream Gallery before July 27th for a closer look!

Thank you to all my loyal fans who have encouraged me to stretch, to be more adventuresome, and to try a new media. In other words, thanks for inspiring me to take a bite out of life!
